About:
Nathan-Paul Davis is a Cleveland-born saxophonist, flutist, composer, and producer whose music bridges the spiritual intensity of Black American church traditions with the forward edge of contemporary sound. Rooted in jazz but unbound by it, his work merges bebop, gospel, funk, and hip-hop into a language that is both ancestral and futuristic.
A deeply expressive improviser, Davis developed his voice through church, community, and mentorship, carrying forward a lineage of Black music as lived experience rather than academic exercise. His performances move fluidly between meditative stillness and explosive energy, grounded in a philosophy that music is not just heard, but embodied.
Davis has shared the stage with artists such as Sean Jones, Gary Bartz, Endea Owens, Nate Smith, and Dan Wilson, demonstrating a versatility that spans straight-ahead jazz, experimental music, and contemporary Black creative expression.
As a bandleader, he fronts The Admirables—an ensemble rooted in groove, spirit, and collective improvisation. Drawing from the legacies of artists like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane, the group blends jazz, funk, hip-hop, and Afro-diasporic musical traditions into a sound that is immersive, high-energy, and spiritually charged. Their performances are not just concerts, but experiences—centered on feel, risk, and deep musical communication—reflecting the full spectrum of the Black musical continuum.
Recognized as one of Cleveland Magazine’s “Most Interesting People” in 2022, Davis is also a recipient of an Ohio Arts Council grant supporting his work as a recording artist. In 2026, he was selected as one of five fellows in the Cleveland Arts Prize Verge Fellowship—an honor awarded to emerging artists demonstrating exceptional promise, artistic excellence, and meaningful community impact.
Beyond the stage, Davis is a pillar in his local arts community, hosting an originals-only jam session that challenges musicians to develop their own voice and contribute new work to the tradition.
In addition to performing, he is an educator and mentor, working with young musicians to develop both technical skill and artistic identity. His recent work pushes further into new territory—integrating live drums, 808 bass, and experimental textures with high-level improvisation—continuing to expand the possibilities of modern Black music.
